An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
