British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
