The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
